Starting from January 1, 2019, employers are prohibited from holding money belonging to their foreign domestic workers (FDWs), including their paid salaries. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has implemented a new work permit condition to prevent disputes related to money, benefiting both employers and FDWs. Employers caught keeping their maids’ money could face severe penalties, including a fine of up to $10,000 and imprisonment for up to 12 months.
The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) stated in a release that the practice of employers holding onto maids’ money creates inconveniences and risks for both parties. Foreign domestic workers (FDWs) without direct access to their funds must rely on their employers for money, resulting in frequent requests. Additionally, employers must accurately track and return the correct amount of money to their workers, adding to the administrative burden.
Employers are mandated by law to remit their FDWs’ salaries promptly and in full.
This new work permit condition coincides with the recent announcement restricting the borrowing limits of foreigners residing in Singapore, encompassing foreign workers and domestic helpers.
