In a survey involving 100 caregivers responsible for seniors, SingHealth Polyclinics (SHP) discovered that more than 40% lack confidence in carrying out tasks related to blood pressure and glucose monitoring, while over 30% feel uneasy about overseeing medication.
A limited-scale investigation conducted by the SingHealth healthcare group has revealed the insufficient preparedness of caregivers in the realm of senior care.
Despite more than 80% of seniors aged 65 and above having at least one chronic disease, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol, a significant proportion of caregivers remain uncertain about their charges’ medication adherence. Over nearly two decades of experience in polyclinics, approximately 30% of elderly individuals were accompanied by helpers who sometimes expressed uncertainty about the regularity of their charges’ medication intake, according to Ms. Ang Kim Wai, a nurse clinician at the Tampines polyclinic and the primary author of the research paper. “While some seniors take their medication independently, the helpers may not consistently monitor them due to other domestic responsibilities,” Ms. Ang explained.
Inadequately handled chronic conditions can result in complications and increased morbidity, highlighted by Clinical Associate Professor Tan Ngiap Chuan, who serves as the Director of Research at SHP.
Although SHP currently involves helpers during a patient’s regular visits, the organization is now endeavoring to create a customized curriculum for them. Additionally, they are exploring the possibility of conducting lessons in languages in which the workers are proficient.
The initiative aims to commence with a workshop by the end of the year to equip helpers with relevant skills. The pilot program will be implemented at the Eunos polyclinic, initially accommodating up to 15 helpers per class. The organization plans to assess the feasibility and scalability of the program, considering potential collaborations with employment agencies.
Assoc Prof Tan, who also serves as the vice-chair of research at the SingHealth Duke-NUS Family Medicine Academic Clinical Programme, emphasized the goal of bridging the existing gap. He highlighted the potential benefits when helpers come together, bringing forth their unique caregiving experiences. Through this collaborative effort, the organization aims to identify and address the specific challenges helpers encounter in caring for older individuals, fostering a supportive learning environment.
This tragic incident highlights the significance of accurate and responsible reporting, especially when dealing with sensitive topics. In the digital age, misinformation can spread quickly and have serious consequences. It is essential for news outlets and individuals to verify information before publication and, when errors occur, promptly correct them. The Ministry of Manpower’s swift response and emphasis on the well-being of domestic workers serve as a reminder of the importance of compassion, empathy, and responsible journalism in our society.
