In the coming year, working mothers will have the option to claim a set amount of tax relief for children born or adopted, departing from the existing system that relies on a percentage of their income.
Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong revealed on Tuesday (Feb 14) during his Budget statement that the foreign domestic worker levy tax relief will expire from the year of assessment 2025, applicable to income earned in 2024.
Starting from January 1, 2024, working mothers will have the opportunity to receive annual reliefs of S$8,000 for the first child born or adopted, S$10,000 for the second child, and S$12,000 for the third child and any subsequent children.
This marks a departure from the current system, where the relief amount is determined by a percentage of the mother’s income: 15% for the first child, 20% for the second child, and 25% for the third and subsequent children.
The modification implies that higher-income mothers may experience a reduction in their tax reliefs, while lower-income mothers might see an increase in their relief amounts.
